For the month of August, we’d like to recognize Mario Medina for his fighting spirit and humble attitude.
Some of the most-feared words in the English language, “You have cancer” can bring even the strongest person to his knees. When Surface Busters owner, Mario Medina, heard the news that he had stomach cancer in 2012, he chose not to fear or become angry. Instead, he gathered strength and comfort from friends and family members while he turned to God.
“I just wanted to say thank you for the amazing support and prayers,” he said on a Facebook page at the beginning of his diagnosis process. “God has been so faithful to us and has revealed Himself to us in so many ways. I am ready to begin this new chapter in my life. God has given me strength, this incredible faith, an amazing family and all of you that are constantly thinking and praying for us.”
His biggest fear was that cancer would be in his bones. When he found out that fear would thankfully not be realized, he and his friends and family expressed thanks while Medina and his wife sought the best treatment options.
After undergoing chemotherapy for about a year, a CT scan showed no signs of the cancerous tumor, and Medina, his wife and young son rejoiced.
Devastatingly, however, his stomach tumor came back a second time eight months later.
Still, he and his wife and young son remained positive throughout the next year of treatment. “Life does not stop from happening because you have cancer,” he said on a Facebook page. “These two years feel more like three years. It’s been very tough at times, but I continually get reminded that God is with us every step of the way. He is faithful to us and he has put so many amazing people in our lives to support us and share our pain… My mindset is still the same — I will beat this cancer!!!”
A second child was born to the Medinas during his radiation treatment of 2014, and in May of 2015, the Medinas received the news they had been hoping to hear: “Today I praise my Lord and savior Jesus Christ for healing me,” Medina said in a Facebook post. “Today I got the good news I am CANCER FREE!!!!!!”
Medina is a friend of ours at ALLBRiGHT, and we are inspired and amazed by his faith, hard work, and hope. “English is his second language and he doesn’t let that stop him either,” said Josh Abramson owner of ALLBRiGHT. “He hustles every day, he is humble and grateful, he supports the community and his local church Crossroads Community Church and he wants to give God all the glory. He is ALLBRiGHT!”
