Painting Solar Reflective Material on Skylights at UCLA Medical Center

ALLBRiGHT 1-800-PAINTING was chosen to install a new paint product from Belgium, called Liquisol 4EVERblue on the skylights at the Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrance. This project and materials are unique and interesting for many reasons. One being that this product solar reflective water-based acrylic varnish that is applied on the outside of skylights, conservatories, or skydomes. It’s a translucent liquid material that uses pigments that reflect the infra-red heat of the sun and forms a window tint like the film after drying. After it’s applied correctly, it protects buildings from overheating by blocking solar energy. Liquisol 4EVERblue has an opaque look, a slight golden shine on the outside, and a blue shine on the inside.

The project was challenging because of the access to skylights. Whenever painting the outside of a skylight, it usually comes with a degree of difficulty, but in this case, the skylights were large panels that made up a very long wall at a 45-degree angle. We needed to have scaffold installed that would allow us to tie off on to, so we could safely access. Our trained and scaffold certified men had to be harnessed at all times and practically lay down on the job to reach certain areas. This is one of the only times our guys are being accused of laying down on the job – and for good reason! This project required Activity Hazard Analysis reports to be filled out because of the high risk that could have had catastrophic results without strict adherence to public safety procedures.

This isn’t the first time ALLBRiGHT 1-800-PAINTING has been chosen to apply unique paint products on difficult and challenging projects. From the Goliath Rollercoaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain to a 14-story iconic curved building called the Gateway to Beverly Hills. In 2007, ALLBRiGHT 1-800-PAINTING was selected to be the first contractor to apply a new product, called Quarzo Silossanico, from Italy on the exterior of 9777 Wilshire Blvd in Beverly Hills. This product has very high adhesion and a course texture to it that claims it will resist pollution and dirt while having a matte finish that looks stunning.

There are some pretty incredible paint technologies being developed all over the world and ALLBRiGHT 1-800-PAINTING is glad to be chosen for such incredible projects.
